Dixie Chicks' Maines Now Says President is Owed 'No Respect Whatsoever'

NEW YORK (AP) -- The Dixie Chicks' Natalie Maines apologized for disrespecting President Bush during a London concert in 2003. But now she's taking it back.
"I don't feel that way anymore," she told Time magazine for its issue hitting newsstands Monday. "I don't feel he is owed any respect whatsoever."
As war in Iraq loomed, Maines told the London audience, "Just so you know, we're ashamed that the President of the United States is from Texas.''
The remarks led to death threats and a backlash from other country stars, including a high-profile spat with Toby Keith. It also stalled what until then had been the group's smashinglysuccessful career.
Bandmate Emily Robinson said she knew right away the remark wouldn't be taken lightly and got "hot from my head to my toes."
"It wasn't that I didn't agree with her 100%. It was just, 'Oh, this is going to stir something up,'" she told Time.
For band member Martie Maguire, the controversy was a blessing in disguise.
"I'd rather have a small following of really cool people who get it, who will grow with us as we grow and are fans for life, than people that have us in their 5-disc changer with Reba McEntire and Toby Keith," Maguire said. "We don't want those kinds of fans. They limit what you can do."
The Chicks' hits include "Landslide," "Goodbye Earl," and "Wide Open Spaces." Their new album, "Taking the Long Way," is due out May 23. The first single is "Not Ready to Make Nice."

Good for her. Chimpy deserves no respect
Let's make the Dixie Chicks new album release the biggest ever on iTunes, WalMart, Amazon, wherever. Give the Nashville establishment a bloody nose.
fantastic - wish some elected officials would say the same thing
he is a horrific disaster and should be treated as such
i just see a lot of politicians and their addiction to their comfort and insular world doing absolutely nothing of consequence
(except john conyers of course)
She has.
Unfortunately..
They will probably get more death threats from right wing wackos for saying that, again.
They've been #1 on Amazon for the last two days. I just bought
2 CD's....I already had one but it was wearing "thin". I think I would have bought them even if I didn't like their music. Screw country music radio stations.
WASHINGTON (AFP) - The patriarch of US conservatives has urged his followers to halt their financial support of the Republican Party and start an independent movement, signaling a major political shift that could result in heavy losses for the US ruling party in upcoming elections.
Richard Viguerie, who was instrumental in cementing the winning coalitions behind Ronald Reagan in 1980 and George W. Bush in 2000, declared that conservatives were "downright fed up" with both the president and Republican-controlled Congress.
"At the very least, conservatives must stop funding the Republican National Committee and other party groups," Viguerie wrote in a lengthy essay in The Washington Post Sunday.
He suggested conservatives "redirect their anger into building a third force," which he defined as a movement independent of any party, and laying the groundwork for the 2008 election campaign.

Bush governs in dictator style
By Robert L. Black Jr.
The investigation by Congress of the surveillance of domestic telephone and e-mails calls is an absolute necessity, because the greatest threat at this time is not so much to our "security" as to the preservation of our constitutional system of government.
The underlying question is whether we will discard the checks and balances of the Constitution in favor of some sort of mythical guarantee of our security.
President Bush's approval of domestic surveillance is just the tip of the iceberg. the Boston Globe on April 30 (and the New York Times on May 12) reported that President Bush claims authority to disobey more than 750 laws enacted since he took office.
