How to become more thick headed.....
The immediate question which should be raised is whether the study was prospective or retrospective. If, as I suspect, it was retrospective, it would be biased by the overrepresentation of people with preserved cognitive function in the meditation group (presumably dementing people at some stage stop being able to meditate?)There might be other confounders - I would expect meditators (i.e. people who buy into a less carnivorous, less substance abuse lifestyle) to be people somewhat less likely to eat an atherogenic diet, be less obese, less alcoholic.Only a prospective study with well matched meditation and control groups would be acceptable evidence for a specific benefit from meditation.
